Understanding Teen Anxiety: What Parents Need to Know

Recognizing the Signs of Anxiety in Adolescents

Anxiety is more than occasional worry — it’s a persistent, overwhelming feeling that can affect a teen’s thoughts, behaviors, and even their physical health. For many teens in New Hampshire and across New England, anxiety shows up quietly at first: a drop in grades, skipped practices, or a sudden avoidance of social events.

Parents and guardians may also notice:

  • Increased irritability or mood swings
  • An excessive need to control situations
  • Frequent headaches or stomachaches with no clear cause
  • Trouble sleeping—or sleeping too much
  • Perfectionism or self-criticism
  • A need for constant reassurance

Often, these are signals of internal distress, especially when a teen feels overwhelmed but struggles to express why.

Understanding the Many Faces of Teen Anxiety

Today’s teens live in a world that’s always “on.” Between social media, group chats, and constant online connection, it can feel like there’s no escape from comparison, pressure, or judgment. These platforms do offer connection, but they also bring new kinds of stress for growing minds.

Research from the Harvard Graduate School of Education shows that teens who spend five or more hours a day on electronic devices are more likely to experience increased anxiety — 48% of these teens show at least one suicide risk factor.

But social media is only part of the picture. Troubled teens face

anxiety from many sources, including:

  • Academic pressure and fear of failure
  • Family stress or changes at home
  • Social challenges, including peer relationships and bullying
  • Personal temperament or genetics
  • Traumatic events or loss
  • Health issues or sleep problems

Keeping these pressures in mind guides us in offering teens the patience and care they need.

The Prevalence of Teen Anxiety in New Hampshire and the U.S.

If your teen is struggling with anxiety, you’re not alone. Anxiety is one of the most common mental health issues among young people, affecting families across New Hampshire, the US, and around the globe.

According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 10 children and teens in the U.S. have been diagnosed with anxiety. This isn’t just normal worry—this is persistent anxiety that interferes with daily life, school, and friendships.

Even before the pandemic, the American Psychological Association noted a 20% rise in childhood anxiety diagnoses over five years. Clinicians see more teens dealing with sleep problems, social avoidance, and panic attacks.

The good news? Teen anxiety is very treatable.
With growing awareness and better resources than ever, young people are learning to manage their symptoms and feel like themselves again.

When to Seek Professional Help

Anxiety isn’t just a phase, and it’s not something most teens simply grow out of. Left untreated, it can impact school, relationships, and long-term well-being. It can lead to other mental health issues like depression and exacerbate ADHD symptoms

If your teen’s anxiety is interfering with daily life, lasting for weeks or months, or making it hard for them to function, it’s time to seek support.

At Direction Behavioral Health, we offer compassionate, evidence-based anxiety treatment that’s designed to help teens build healthy coping skills, reduce symptoms, and feel more in control.

Navigating ANXIETY Together

Structured Anxiety Treatment for Teens Without Disrupting Daily Life

For teens facing serious anxiety, our IOP for teen anxiety provides the right balance: a structured, supportive program that fits alongside school, family, and social life. This way, treatment doesn’t take over—it becomes part of a healthy routine.

An IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) offers intensive therapeutic support several days a week while allowing teens to live at home and attend school. It’s a step down from PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program), providing focused care without the need for full hospitalization.

Balancing Treatment with Daily Life

Our teen IOP runs five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 3 PM to 6 PM. We design our IOP program so your teen can still attend school, live at home with their family, and see their friends.

Structured Yet Flexible Programs

Group therapy is the core of our IOP for anxiety program. Using Direction Behavioral Health’s Wholeistic Education model, our straightforward approach helps teens build healthy relationships and daily habits that help manage their symptoms.

For teens who need it, medication management is available on-site. Licensed nurse practitioners and child psychiatrists work closely with your teen, monitoring progress and making timely adjustments to medications as needed.

A Place to Move, Create, and Grow

Our facility, located in Nashua, NH, also offers plenty of ways for teens to connect and unwind, such as:

  • Shooting hoops in the gym or playing pickleball
  • Jamming on musical instruments with professional-grade recording gear
  • Walking and exploring the nearby Mine Falls Park trails

This blend of structured therapy and therapeutic activities helps teens manage anxiety while still enjoying their teen years.

Family Involvement and Support

We know caring for a teen with anxiety isn’t easy, and families are the heart of healing. That’s why we offer parent groups to help you understand what your teen is experiencing and give you tools to support them at home.

Our clinicians guide you through tough parenting moments, sharing Leadership Principles and Behavioral Guidelines that can make a real difference.

Voices of Hope: Teens and Families Speak Out

Here’s what some of the teens and families we’ve helped have to say about their journey with Direction Behavioral Health:

“Direction was there for me as a teenager, up into the start of my 20s. I'm very fond of them and still keep in contact. I really feel strongly that if it weren't for the help I got from them, I would lack a lot of skills I need for dealing with the world around me.” — M.B.

“Best thing I ever did for myself. Changed my life completely for the better. Would recommend to anybody.” — M.
